New Decisions, New Ideas

Hey all, sorry, I was locked out of my account!
So there's some big changes going on in my life right now. I am changing schools after my first semester of my senior year. It's a necessary change because where I am is not where I want to be and I am now going to FIT to study technical design. I am still finishing up my semester here at Marist and I am making the most of it by working on things I want to work on, including new textile designs, new dress designs, and I'm making them fit me instead of an industry fit model. I'm really excited about this change, I'm a lot less stressed and I feel like even though I don't have a senior collection, I have a lot to show for my free time.
In my Textile Design class, we've been working on a medley of projects. This one is called Batik, which is a wax resist you put on the fabric and then paint over. Here are some pictures I took during our process!

My Last Day

So clearly I celebrated too early about regularly updating.
Sorry about that.
But I actually have been busy doing the project I was meant to do a long time ago.
So I will just write about my last day and then backtrack to the party and anything else interesting that happened...
My last day was so sad! I didn't want to leave.
They surprised me with a going away party! It was so sweet. I bought my breakfast on the way into work as usual and when I came in, the girl who sits at the desk next to me kind of stared at me funny. I didn't know why but she seemed confused. After we chatted for a bit I left to get my computer and when I came back she had left, I just assumed she had to go do something, we were at work, after all. I sat down to eat my breakfast, it was about 9:10 and I usually go over to see who needs me at 9 but I hadn't eaten and I was too busy chatting at first and I figured they wouldn't need me asap. I ate about half of my food when I got an email from my boss saying that the sweater and knit team needed me. I debated finishing my breakfast but I figured I was taking too long and they might really need me.
I walked over to their row, waved to one of the workers that I got really close to, and then my boss yelled "Surprise!!"
They had a whole breakfast buffet with fruit and donuts and pretzels, coffee, orange juice, cream puffs, everything! It was great! I really should have seen it coming, they throw parties for every occasion at that place, but I had no idea! They gave me balloons and a card that they all signed wishing me luck at school and saying they would keep in touch and it was so nice! We just hung out and chatted and ate a lot of really sweet, disgusting food for breakfast! Apparently everyone was worried that I wouldn't show and was asking my boss how she would get me over here without suspecting. She said that it was fine since I always come over right away but then everyone was standing there and I hadn't shown up so she shot me an email, haha, it was definitely a good call or I would have keep eating my food!
And apparently the weird looks I got was because of me already holding food, she was worried about the breakfast party! She even said that the reason she left before I came back was because she knew we would keep talking and that she wouldn't be able to go or get me over there herself.
After the party it was business as usual but saying goodbye was hard. I got hugs from everyone and they all said to stay in touch and if I get the time to stop by they want me to let them know and they'll let me in to hang. My boss also said to let her see my progress on my senior projects and she'd love to help if she could and to let her know what I'm up to after graduation.I started a Linkedin to keep in touch with everyone and I've "connected" with most of them already. It's going to be so weird not to go back...I loved it there. I wore my sombraro all morning.

Busy Week(s)

Hey there, I know, I'm late again.
The good news is that I'm late because I have been hard at work!
Let's start with all of the fun that was last week...
(LAST) SUNDAY: I did the COLOR RUN in Philly. It was completely ridiculous. I couldn't breath or see for some of it (the color cloud of doom was a little much) but it was completely worth it! I had signed up back when I was home with some of my friends so I got to see the ones I love that I haven't seen since being in Philly. The run was only 1.6 miles away from where I live but it still took me 10 minutes to get there and then another 10 to find a parking spot. I got there at about 6:15am and met up with my friends who were already there. We went through registration, we were the Double Rainbow Brites and we got a shirt and some color dust to throw around later. This was the largest organized run in history (I think that's what they said) with 23,000 people in one place! We got in line to start around 7:15 and probably didn't actually get to the start line until around 7:45. Then we were off! We danced, we ran, we walked and we turned multicolored all within about 30 minutes. It was also one of the hottest days of the year so they said they were adding more water stations. There was one. And it was .5 miles (of the 3.1mi) into the race so anyone without a water bottle (me) was kind of fucked. Once we finished we joined the giant color cloud and got a ton of water. Once in the cloud it was madness, you couldn't see or hear of really breath. There were people on people's shoulders, breakdance fighting and even a woman waving around a rubber chicken. She smeared green color all over my left arm because "I didn't look green enough." It was completely crazy we we took pictures of ourselves as the hot messes we were on the Rocky stairs and this was all done before 10am! I said bye to my friends, went home and after two showers, there were still parts of me that were blue and pink.
I then met up with another friend from home who actually goes to school and works here in Philly and she showed me around Center and Old City. We are the kind of friends that just talks about anything and everything regardless of how long it's been or how often we talk in between. I haven't seen this girl in at least three years and we don't keep in touch but we spent 5 hours just joking and walking around with each other and it was so much fun. I love that girl. She took me to her favorite tappas restaurant and then we went our separate ways.

(LAST) MONDAY: This was really great because by boss for Free People sent me over to the sweaters department in a different building and I got to hang out with a whole new set of people. While I didn't do what I would call actual work, I got to see another side of the industry that really fascinates me: knitwear. I have been knitting since I was younger and took knitwear while I was in Italy last Fall where I took a knitting class and working both by hand and on a machine. I knew enough that I could ask smart questions and understand the answers and so my boss for the day and I got along really well. I did go on a small rant about my evil teachers, but I knew how I was presenting myself and was able to stop before I caused too much damage. But she did end the day saying that I was very smart and she was glad she got to meet me. I hope that I can spend another day or two over there, it was really fun to see her do....everything! She also let me keep a bunch of old color cards that they were going to throw out, so while I can't really use them (1 because they;re last seasons, and 2 because they probable only work in large quantities and will not send to a student), I now have a really great catalog of color references!

(LAST) TUESDAY: I went to the Barnes Foundation with work and it was phenomenal. I love these intern activities they have for us, they're always spectacular. I love art and so getting to see so many paintings by so many artists was amazing. Dr. Barnes (I have no idea what he was a Dr. of but he was clearly loaded), started collecting art and his collection grew so much that he created a new building off his house to house it. After his death, his only wish was that his collection never be moved. So of course it was moved. People were coming to see his collection and paying entries like it was a museum (it basically was) but his house was in the suberbs of nowhere, so the city replicated his house down to every last detail in the art district of Philly and put every painting exactly where is was originally in the set up. That way it is exactly the same as how he had left it (kind of) but more people could access it. So many great artists were housed there such as Rousseau, Picasso, Rodin, and Sauret, as well as lesser known like Modigliani and Glackens (who was actually a friend of Barnes's and the only one he trusted to buy art for him). It was a gorgeous collection and I was getting paid to see it. Amazing.

(LAST) WEDNESDAY: I got up early to go get breakfast with a bunch of interns at one of the original stores in the city. We got free food and listened to a presentation about all of the different managers and jobs that are available and what it takes to run a store. It was really interesting, we got to see all of the set up and visual art books and meet some of the men that were actually putting up all of the crazy displays. The one in charge of that was my favorite because he was just so funny and comfortable with himself. He also had piercings, tattoos, and a teddy bear T-shirt so I'm sure you can see the appeal. We also got a tour of the store and did an activity where we split into groups and we each had to create a style for an assigned customer based on what we had learned that day. Our groups customer was "The Beautiful and the Damned" so we went for a lace dress, a cut up tank top to put over it, a studded cross shoulder bag, a crystal necklace and some clunky Jeffrey Campbell heels to finish it off. We didn't win the design contest but they did say that we knew our customer well and that it was a good job. After that we got on a bus back to work.

Hmm...I went home this last weekend and then let's see....
This week was actually quite slow, which was disappointing. I feel like neither team remembers which days it gets me so they don't really have anything for me to do. I am however getting very close with my Market team. They are the one's that I thought might have an interest in hiring me, so I'm really glad about that.  Our conversations are getting goofier and we joke and talk and they're all so nice. Oh! I also moved desks. It;s just one back (where the other intern, Natalie, used to sit-she got moved closer to her team) and an older Russian woman took my seat. She's really very nice but I think that sometimes she sounds really rude because she has some broken English and a heavy accent. I actually saw one of my coworkers make a na-na-na-na-boo face behind her back because she was forced to move all of her work because it was "in the way." I don't know if the face was just for my benefit but I do know that she enjoyed it regardless. We were actually supposed to have our huge company party yesterday but it was moved to next Wednesday because it was supposed to rain both yesterday and today (it didn't yesterday, it already has today) but I heard it's a great time! I went to another meeting with Kathy yesterday just to catch up and even she said "They had a margarita machine last year...Don't worry, there will be alcohol." Apparently they go all out. Last year there was a mechanical bull and a bouncy slide and all kinds of crazy. A few years ago she said they made their own ice skating rink! But they never have the party on a Friday to stop people from being too crazy at a company party, especially since apparently parts of it always end up on Youtube. Kathy also asked if I wanted to shadow the design team at some point, I said I would but I was also like to be in the Pattern Making room at some point if we could swing it. She said she would do what she could and I asked if she's hear dof any problems since our last talk and she said there haven't been any! I'm so happy! And today I am actually writing this in the middle of the day (which is probably why it's so long) because I had to call out sick :( I think something bit me in my sleep because I woke up with a puffy, itchy face and red eyes so I stayed home. At least after this post I can work on my collection. I am almost down with collection number 1, but there are still 2 more collections and 2 more projects to go and I'm down to I think 5 weeks! Yikes! I guess it's time to sign off and get to it, til next time!

Continuation...

Hey. So I think I'm going to start blogging on Friday instead cause this trying-to-remember-what-I-did-last-week thing is not working out.
So where was I? I covered going into the city...doing nothing on Sunday....
Monday was nice. There was a bridal shower for one of the girls, Amanda, so I picked up some fruit on the way in to contribute to her surprise party. She's getting married tomorrow and we had this huge party all set up. There were about 20 people, a shit ton of food (lots of cheese, chocolate, cake, fruit-awesome) and we had a toilet paper bride contest! I have to say, watching a bunch of people who create clothing for a living making a normally half-assed dress out of toilet paper was ridiculous. There was some seriously, pleating, attempted rouching, layering, accessories, rosettes and even heard a few utterances of "This should really be on the bias..." Our team won dressing up my tech coordinator because it was the only dress that stayed fully intact-it was also awesome (and the one with the rosettes).
After that my team sent me to the Free People building to work with the sweaters team which was a lot of fun since I do know a bit about machine and hand knitting. My boss there was really nice and really good at answering questions and making sure I understood the process-even if it was something I was just sitting in on or watching. Also, since I was no longer in the cafeteria building there were dogs everywhere! They were so cute! I wish we had a dog-friendly building...
On Tuesday I got to meet up with the parents of Alex's Lemonade Stand (both of the little girl Alex and now the corporation), Jay and Liz. They were there to receive the check we were donating to them by way of the stands we put up the first week (did I talk about them? I think so-they were fun). It was them and about 8 of us interns in our cafeteria for lunch and they were so nice. We talked a little about Alex's Lemonade the company and I told them about how involved our high school is (we do a drive every year), but mostly we talked about hobbies. I was sitting closer to Jay and to Liz so I heard a lot about crazy biking marathons and different types of exercise and training but it was all very fun to listen to. I also learned they have three other kids, all boys, the oldest just graduating high school. For those who don't know, Alex was a little girl who in 2000, at the age of four, wanted to start a lemonade stand to help raise money for "her hospital" and to help other kids like her. She raised over $1 million before she passed away in 2004. It's am amazing non-profit foundation and really anyone can set up their own stand to help those with the disease. Here's the site if you want to learn more: http://www.alexslemonade.org/
Wednesday was, of course, the Fourth of July! I was supposed to go to the shore but a member of our party over slept and we missed our teeny window to miss traffic so we just stayed in and I worked on my project. When I wasn't working I was overseeing my drunk housemates. Here's what I learned about America in the meantime:
"Why are you cleaning?"
"For America."

"I'm gonna shotgun this beer."
"Shotgunning a beer over the sink to avoid drippage is not American.."
*Tosses can in the garbage*
"Not recycling: American."  (Don't worry, we ended up recycling).

"I really wanna be drunk but I might puke."
"America will understand."
"I don't know...America's not about loving you for your flaws."

"Corona?! That's a Mexican beer! Today is a Budweiser day! FOR AMERICA!"

"Lets all do a mash up of the Star Spangled Banner for America's birthday."
"...Does anyone know all the lyrics?"
"......"
"AMERICA!"

And so on. It was a pretty American/offensive day all around.

Then there was this GIANT free concert about 25 blocks away so I went to that. I saw Queen Latifah, Joe Jonas (who was actually really good-he sang some Jo-Bro songs solo which I found funny) and Nick even popped out for a bit causing young girls and boys alike to scream and cry. I personally find Joe cuter but I understand that people now see him as douchey (no real argument here), and Nick is more talented. It was like I was in middle-okay, high school again, and it was pretty fun. There was Common, who I'm sorry to say I don't actually know but they're apparently really big and they plated well. Queen Latifah came out again and sang with them which was cool since I missed the beginning of her set. Oh! And before her, whom I also missed, was Roots, who as I also don't know but who are apparently very popular. Then were was Daryl Hall from Hall & Oates who clearly did know and loved.
I'm such a square.
But he was fantastic! He played a really long set too, which was impressive. He played Maneater, Rich Girl, You Make My Dreams Come True and I Can't Go For That. So good. And he was looking pretty AMERICAN too. I mean, when he first came out people were like..."Who's this guy?" And I didn't know what Hall looked like so I took a look and this is what I saw: White older guy. Long blond hair. Blue jeans. A red checkered button down. I said he looked like "Some old white guy. AMERICA!" I mean, I think the statement still holds.
After him was a surprise performance by Lauren Hill-again had no idea who she was. But she was really, really good and looked amazing! She played about 4 songs and then came the fireworks! That's always my favorite part of the Fourth. Seeing the sky light up and feeling the blast in your chest. It's the best. The fireworks were really pretty but with such a large crowd I didn't get the same powerful feeling.
Again, all of this was free (minus the water and food I bought) so I saw this was a pretty fantastic Fourth overall.
Thursday wasn't all that spectacular. A lot of people were out so there wasn't much to do (kind of the opposite of what I had assumed but people got their shit done early) so I read the URBN site and some blogs it advertised. During the work I did have I listened to a Starkid musical play out in the background. I got through both AVPS and B@man so I was pretty happy.
Today I had a little more to do but not much, I sat in on a fitting which was fun. They're not as exciting as I had first assumed but they're still fun to watch and kills a lot of time when there's no work to go around. It's also a good time to socialize with your bosses and even the design teams and get to know everyone so that's good. I had another bi-monthly meeting today and more good things and one not so good thing. This time it had nothing to do with measuring, but one of the girls I'm friends with has had basically no work all week and she's not the most tactful about how she's spending her free time. She watches a lot of Startrek on her computer and that's literally it....Anyway, she's been spending a lot of time at my desk chatting with me and Nat since she has no work and it was brought up that she has been distracting us and that we need to snip that now. Kathy said that she sees me as a hard worker and she doesn't want another intern to get in the way of a successful career for me there, which is nice but I felt bad. I kind of wanted to defend Susan but...it's true. We're at work. And I love when she spending time with me and when she comes over to chat, but just cause she doesn't have work, doesn't mean I don't. I always get it down on time, generally early, and this is a trend that just started this week so I really didn't think it was a big deal but apparently is it. I don't know if her supervisor is going to talk to her now or what but I hope she doesn't get into trouble. It's the supervisor's job to give her work anyway so...
But that was my week. It was good, fun, interesting. On to more school work!
And again, I think this blog is going to start updating on Fridays, so check in!

Happy Birthday America!

Hey guys! I hope everyone's have a great 4th of July!
So this week was a lot of fun! I think I'm actually going to start with the weekend though, because that's when all the fun things happened.
I've been meaning to get into the city so that I could swatch and check out some vintage clothes and things like that but it's surprisingly hard to get into the city from Philly if you are like me and don't know how to plan anything.  So I drove home on Friday and jumped on a 7:20 bus to go into the city. Of course everything went wrong right away, I forgot to eat breakfast, the ticket booth was open, my kindle died and I kept getting battery warning from mt iPod. I figured it'd be a pretty long day.
I get in and immediately set out to B&J which only swatches from 9-10. I get all of my swatches and some yards and get to catch up with my favorite sales man there. I've mentioned him once of twice before, he's a lot of fun to chat with. We talked a lot about Disney as he and his family just went on their first trip there together and they loved it. We talked about pets as his son now is obsessed with puppies and we talked about work and school.
Next I walked by B&Q Trimming which I knew was nearby and I picked up some sequins and beads for fabric manipulations. I get a discount there because of my enrollment into the NY School of Burlesque (if you're interested I would definitely check it out) and then made my way to Mood. It was 10:30 when I got there and I was told that they were filming Project Runway inside and that we wouldn't be allowed up for another hour. I was not really in the mood to wait so I made my way up to Pigalle where I always eat.
I got my favorite waiter again but this time was a little awkward.I think he was hitting on me. He didn't charge me and asked how long I was going to be in the city. When I said "just for the day" he said that was too bad and asked when I'd be back. I said I didn't know but he asked if maybe I'd be around in two weeks. I said I don't know, couldn't promise anything but will be back once summer ends. He also seemed sad when I saw I live in Philly right now. I don't know, still very nice but a very strange encounter.
Rather than head straight back to Mood, I took the subway further down to Cheap Jack's, this really nice/expensive vintage store. I bought 4 dresses from the 60s and a heavily embroidered jacket for both wear and inspiration for about $400. Now that sounds like a lot, and is a lot, but for legitimate vintage dresses, it was a pretty nice deal and I made friends with a bunch of the workers who tried to get my the best deal. I bought two garments at 30% off and the other three were buy 1 get 2 free. After dropping way too much money at one place,, I went back up to Mood, spent maybe 30 minutes there swatches and buying yardage and then caught the bus home.
Crap. I've got to cut this short. I have the fireworks show to go to soon and I should do some school work before then. I'll be back either tonight or tomorrow! Happy 4th!

Not My Fault! ...Kind of My Fault

So sorry! I know that I was going to do this every week and now I'm two weeks behind! Ah!
Here's what happened the first week: Not my Fault.
So I was actually super excited to post last Wednesday and was all about what I was going to say and how I was going to say it wittily and things like that when my internet went out for two days starting Wednesday night! So my week went as can be expected, I celebrated a little too early.
I found out that there had been some problems with my measuring. Not awful problems but it had been brought up that certain things were consistently wrong, which is not good when in general, measurements should be really exact. Two of the people I had worked with had noticed this and told my boss who very sweetly showed me how to do it correctly. No one was rude about it but I felt like I had let them down. They were extra cautious to make sure I knew was I was doing that day and it frustrated me. I did ask, later though, if everything was okay. I wanted to make sure that my mistakes weren't messing with someone else's deadline and Beth assured me nothing was the matter, that I'm still doing a great job and that it was nice of me to ask.
I also found out that the adorable Pete is married, so it clearly was not my week. I almost cried, but not actually.
But the weekend before I went shopping and finally used my employee discount at an Urban store near me! It was great, except I'm not allowed to go shopping by myself. I am extremely indecisive and I think I was in that one for store for literally two hours. It was an ungodly amount of time. BUT while I was in there, I started asking the girl who worked the fitting rooms for opinions and stuff because, again, I can't decide things ever. We got to talking and I found out that she's an intern too and is there (I think) 3 days a week. We decided to do lunch today and it was fun to add her to our little group, she's really fun and we all got along really well.
Oh! and I wouldn't have written this last week cause it wouldn't have happened yet but I was really in bad shape on Friday.I had gone to the girl's house and just had some wine with the guys and drank way more than I had initially thought. Now, I don't usually get hung over...but the next day was not a picnic. I was mostly fine, I was dizzy but I drank water, made and ate breakfast and drove into work rather than used the subway and I was fine! Once I got in, however, it sucked. I went to the bathroom more than once to try to get the breakfast out of my stomach and even laid down once of twice. Classy, I know, I think it's contagious. Well, by 11, both my breakfast and my headache were gone and the rest of the day was wonderful!
I went home again this weekend for my daddy's birthday and we went out to a nice dinner and I bought him the biography of Margret Thatcher, the Iron Lady. He seemed to really like it and I was glad.
On Monday I drove straight in from Jersey and got in at the usual time. I once again did a lot of organizing, spec-ing and more and more people are asking me to full on create style pages and comment cards and sit in on fittings which is fantastic. The designers are always present for a fitting and I learned the amount of time it takes to fit a garment is generally closely related to how clear the designer's "vision" is. It's interesting to watch both sides working together since I only possess once side and my superiors at school just tend to fight with me from the other side. Either way, I still love it. And I'm sorry I'm late at updating. I'm going home again tomorrow to get a bus to the city. I don't know why it's so stupidly hard to get to New York from here. It should be a cinch! But I am a terrible planner and I like to take my time and buying a round trip ticket involves me needing to know what time I'll be done so I can buy the damn thing. It's just easier to get home and hop on the first available bus each way. Night! I'm super pooped.

I Still Love Work

Hey! I made it back again! I almost forgot, but not because I wasn't looking forward to being a consistent blogger, but because I went through most of today thinking it was Tuesday. Smooth.
So, the rest of last week was pretty much the same (already). I get in about 830 because I leave so early but if I leave late then I cut it close. I don't think anyone really cares, because of the super supervisors, I normally beat them in by 30-45 minutes. Everyone else is around and they have work for me to do so it's not like I clock in to be paid and just sit there. Actually I did that a little bit today but even though I got in later than usual no one was there. I read Pride and Prejudice on my Kindle Fire.
So, yes. Last week I already had a routine down. I walk in and I am either with Heather or Beth. If I am with Heather, I sometimes beat her by like 10-15 minutes so I wait for her by working for Beth. Last week I mostly worked with Lan and Pete (under Beth) and they are really nice. Now that they know me more they are even more friendly and Lan always seems happy so say hi and ask for my help. Pete too. He's cute.
I went to my friend's (another intern's) house last night to make tuna salad together for lunch today and we did the girly thing of talking about boys. Pete definitely came up. We both think he's adorable. Even with his oddly styled swoopy hair.
Anywho, so Pete stopped by my desk first thing this morning and gave me a couple of styles that did not need measuring (I hope, cause I didn't do that) but did need to be dated and approved on PDM, the product program that we use. So he told me it needed to be done today but not asap, which was good since I wasn't really his intern today ("his," sigh) and I was being handed over to a new woman named Mitzy. She is very nice and I've seen her every single day I've worked because her desk is right on the other side of mine. I had to spec an entire box of SMS (don't remember what that stands for, something about the factory/mill sample-standard mill sample??) and samples for approval that needed to be matched up and measured and commented on if there were any major changed. Supposedly my hours are til 5, I didn't finish the box until 515.
To be fair though I had other things to do in between. Like packaging. Speaking of, the new intern is here to help with that! Her name is Natalie and she has the desk behind me. She just graduated from design school and is very nice and helpful. When we do packages, I'm no longer with Heather which is kind of sad. Kathy, our supervisor is great, she interviewed me and is very pleasant, but I got to know and be comfortable around Heather as she is younger and more talkative but she doesn't really work in our section of the building so I don't see much of her anymore. She does pop by my desk sometime to snag some food (Mitzy and the girls in the aisle next to us always have some sort of snack) and she always makes short conversation. It's too bad that I don't really know how to be professional friends with someone, I like her a lot but I don't know what subjects are safe and how long we should be talking, plus I'm always measuring when she comes over so even though I'm happy to see her I can't work and talk at the same time. It's doable but I feel like I'm being rude and I don't sound interested.
So the first day with Natalie was a little awkward, same reason as above, I can't small talk and work at the same time. I felt rude that I wasn't really getting to know her but we're at work...so we should be working, right? I can't just stop and get to know someone when I have other people's deadlines to look out for. But I invited her to eat lunch with me and the other girls and she had already eaten, we tried on Tuesday but she got hungry earlier and ate at her desk with me, but then today we finally made it work! We stayed the longest out of everyone and lunch so we (I) could talk without worrying about work. I found out a lot about her school and dream job and what we thought of the company so it was nice. We're definitely more comfortable around each other. If I'm not using my laptop she'll put it away for me when she leaves and I get her laptop in the morning and we ask for each others help and chat a bit and it's nice.
Also, I know this is crazy early but I feel like they like me enough to hire me (as it's going so far-I can't say how my work ethic will be in 2 more weeks time). But yesterday Beth asked what year I was in. I told her I was a rising senior and kind of looked at me and made sure I'd be graduating next year and asked how I liked it here so far. I really like everyone in her department, I would not mind working there after graduation. There is one girl that I talked to on the subway is is in the knitwear department. She said she was an intern two years ago and that she's new this year. They had an opening and they remembered her and offered her the job, she really likes it and I hope sometime similar happens to me. The atmosphere is so nice, the people are great and helpful and fun and I just plug in my iPod and pretend I'm at my own sewing table at school (without the stress) and just bop around all day while getting paid. How could that sound bad?
I'm trying to think if I forgot anything...this entry is kind of a blur and out of order but I think I got the main details in. I'm not sure how different each entry will be since it's about work and I've already seemed to start repeating myself. I might end up making this my full time blog just cause I get excited and wanna share things and then realize is doesn't belong in this category and the not wanting to write another post and blah blah blah, but we'll see. I had an awesome weekend but not sure if I want to share that on here yet, so maybe it'll be in a new post soon or next week. This weekend should be cool too so I have to figure that out.
Night!

Three Days In

Man, I am on a roll with this whole blogging-when-I-said-I-would stuff!
Also, I'm exhausted so this hopefully wont take too long.
Well The last two days were way better than the first! Not that the first was bad, it was just confusing.
Yesterday I was stationed with a woman named Beth who was very sweet and happy to answer questions.  She supervised me while I spec-ed some menswear tops and then had someone else supervise me doing pants. The woman she had supervise me was named Casey and she was so much fun, I saw her again today and she seemed just as happy. It's great to see someone so bubbly in the work force. And not obnoxious bubbly either, just goofy and happy to be there.
So, Beth had me work with menswear yesterday (which is why I was spec-ing menswear) and I helped two of the technical designers. There was a sweet little Korean woman who remembered me today and was very nice, and a man who looked hipster enough to be working there. He was also very nice. When I wasn't helping them I was back with Heather doing mail things which was easier the second time around. On Tuesdays we send out packages so I got to do that which was interesting and hectic and made a lot of noise (beware masking tape).  I even got to sit in on a fitting! It was fun to see someone else do it so easily. Also, it was menswear so the fit model was very cute. He was also very polite, he remembered my name and said it often, okay, maybe not often, but enough for me to know he knew me and that he was nice.
What was great about being in on the fitting was that I also met the design teams in charge of that particular shipment and got to hear their discussions about the mills and the pricing. I feel like I know enough to keep up but when they started talking in abbreviations like CMT, Poho and YY it got a little confusing. Especially YY. The only abbreviations I know that include "Y" is "TY" and "LY" which is"This year" and "Last year" respectively. Seriously though, what in the world is a YY?
This morning I caught a break in my transportation and made it in really early. I thought I was going to be with Heather again and since she wasn't in yet (she probably didn't catch any breaks in transportation) I opened myself up for Beth. Instead of giving me work she gave me this giant binder of company information and codes and abbreviations for seaming and POMs (point of measurement). I spent a while going over the book and making copies for myself before some real work came a long. It turned out that I was not with Heather but with Karen, a woman high up in the department. She is very sweet and was one of the people who initially interviewed me what back in January. She handed me off to the knitwear department who then gave me a lot of garments to photograph and spec which was a lot of fun. I like to feel like I'm helping. The only problem was that some of the things that I had to do confused me and my desk was like 5 rows over from theirs so I had to keep walking back and forth, interrupting their work and then dragging them back to my desk to help out for a minute or two and then repeat it all over again ten minutes later. I felt bad but they were all very nice and said they didn't mind. They probably did.
I ate lunch with my friends in the cafeteria and I will probably gain 30 pounds this summer because everything is big and delicious and bad for you.
On a side note, when I'm at the office I live off tea. Not sure why, I got myself one cup on Monday and about 4 cups yesterday, I think today I only had 2 but I had brought a water and bought a Coke so I was spoken for in more ways than one.
I spec-ed until about 6 when they more or less kicked me out.  I'm still not sure what my hours are supposed to be. Yesterday I stayed until 6 and they didn't need me so they told me I could go. Today, I was given a bunch of work around 5:30 and then ten minutes into it, the woman who gave it to me came over and told me that she didn't realize how late it was when she gave me the work and that I shouldn't get too into it as I should leave at 6. She also told me "not to get into the habit," of what I'm not sure, staying late? Maybe as an intern I only get paid until 5 so I shouldn't stay late, or maybe I do get paid but the company doesn't want to waste that much pay on an intern. I wont lie, one of the reasons I don't mind staying later is because I will (or at least I think I will) get paid more, but that's not it. I really enjoy working there. It's great to walk around all of the shelves and know that I am part of a company that is so important to my generation and age group. I like that everyone I meet seems to like working there. I even like the work, straight up. I was bopping on my ipod and doing specs and was sad when I was told I shouldn't stay any longer. I would've stayed until they didn't have any work left!
Oh well, maybe these hours will get settled once and for all next week when both supervisors come back. Hopefully I'll keep up the good work and update next Wednesday! Night!

The First Day!

So I said I would post today and I'm doing it!
I know, I'm shocked too.
I'm also about to pass out, it's been such a terribly long day.
First I got up at 6, meaning to sleep in until 630 and instead slept til 645. It doesn't seem like a big difference but I hate to be rushed and I needed to be ready to go by 730.
So I jump out of bed! I wanted to wear a dress because it's the first day and I wanted to be pretty, but I stuck my hand out the window and it's so cold  out! Backup plan is a pair of jeans and a tank with a nice jacket.
I get up, get dressed and go make myself some peanut butter toast!
I wait for everyone to get ready and then we're off!
While I love the subway, it took longer than I had expected and I almost feel asleep on it (I didn't fall asleep until 2am last night-something I shall not repeat tonight).
We get there. There are 80 (!) interns this summer! It's quite amazing. While there are people starting at different times so I don't have a definite count, out of the 40 (or so) starting today, only 2 interns were guys, and one struck me as gay...the other struck me as British, so who knows.
We are greeted, fed breakfast and then we talk about the company and our plans.  This all takes from 845to 1. At 12 they served us lunch which was chicken enchiladas, beans and rice and guacamole. It was all delicious and I think I ate more guac than any one person should ever eat in a single sitting.
After that we finally got to go and start working! Luckily, or unluckily depending on your mind, I am in the main building which is open to the public and houses the cafeteria.
Both of my supervisors are out this week on vacation (fabulous planning), and so I got dumped on this poor girl named Heather. She was quite sweet and I enjoyed chatting with her and asking questions but you could tell she had a job to do and babysitting me was not it. I was made to do busy work, nothing terrible, just sorted the mail and sorted clothes into piles for sample sales.  Heather also took me of a tour of the entire building, we apparently have a gym that's open for use! It's actually really cool.
She shows me the outdoor eating area, the different departments in the main building and where she and I will work.
I was told that my internship would go from 9-6 everyday, but as my supervisors weren't here and Heather was not 100% sure on what I was to do told me that interns normally work 9-5 and that I could leave after spending 10 minutes watching her work on a spreadsheet, having finished all of my own sorting and organizing. As some of my new friends were in fact stuck there until 6, and I have a feeling that my schedule will change again once my supervisors return. Hey, more money, right?
I waited for some of my friends to get out off work and then we headed home on the subway together. I would have left earlier since I was the first done but after not paying attention on the subway ride there, there was no way in hell I would have been able to make the trip in reverse. After we got off at our stop, one friend needed to run to the gym and the other needed to stop at a drug store so I walked the rest of the way alone. It was a super nice day if not a little confusing and definitely tiring.
Heading to bed now! Night!
Sorry, but there's no way in hell I'm updating "Stories" right now. :)

A New Start

So I am once again showing my proficiency at forgetting to update. I don't even fully remember the last time I blogged. Anyway, school has been out for about 3 weeks and instead of doing the work I needed to be doing, or blogging, or doing anything remotely productive I have lazed around and hung out with my friends, you know, enjoyed summer before the hard part comes.
So now, a change of scenery.
I am living in Philly, PA. I just moved in today. I met my housemates and my neighbors, spent time with them, went grocery shopping and cooked my very first meal in this kitchen (pasta with homemade tomato sauce with sauteed mushrooms, delicious).
And I start my internship tomorrow. I will be working with Anthropologie in the Technical Design department. I really hope this goes well. I need something to that will tell me "Yes, you can do this. You can do this job. You can be happy here."
I will try to write back tomorrow night about the always-terrifying First Day and I would like to keep this blog updated on every Wednesday (subject to change because I don't know what work is like and as you can see, my blogging track-record is in the pooper).
Have an amazing night! Oh, did anyone catch that hail earlier? Crazy.

Muslin, 101 Uses!

Anyone who has ever worked on sewing project of some sort knows that fabric, thread and muslin (for those making practice garments rather than house projects), shit gets everywhere.
You have no idea just how often I have used the muslin lying around my room, my workspace, or classroom for everyday things.
I used muslin to hang my curtains.
Not make the curtains (also easily done), but hang them.
I used real fabric from fabric closet to make them, but used the selvage from a muslin piece to hang it up (strung it through the hole I created and used it as a rod) along with some tacks.
I use it as a hair tie more often than a real elastic because I can always cut a strip if my hair is hanging in my eyes and tie it up in a Cinderella fashion up-do (looking much less like Cinderella, I might add), and often forget it's there until I am home. Then people point at me and laugh.
Other than a hair tie, my absolutely favorite use for muslin is as the poor man's Band-Aid.
When I prick myself (which is often) I bleed (everywhere). More often than not there are no Band-Aids in our "safety kit" kept under the sinks in one of our workrooms and I must mop myself up before I get blood on my papers or worse, all over the expensive fabric I am probably handling at the time. And I say expensive because when you're bleeding, it's always expensive fabric.
So. My momma came up this weekend and brought me a new rug for my room since I told her that my feeties would get cold on the tile (she's so nice to me). Well, a pin got stuck in the carpet. Pointy side up, as always. I was walking and literally kicked my big toe straight into the pin. I started bleeding a lot and knew that if i stood it would get on the new, and apparently treacherous, carpet. I sat on the ground and wondered if I would be able to skooch to my closet where my Band-Aids are kept. Even if I could, they are on the top shelf, meaning I'd have to stand to get them, totally defeating the purpose of sitting in the first place.
I turned to my left and low and behold! My scrap muslin! For the record, there was muslin on my right too, actually it's all over my floor, but my "neat" box of scraps just happened to be to my left. I ripped some muslin and bandaged my injured foot and stopped the bleeding! Hooray!
I mean . . . I am a bleeder so I had to double up, twice, so it wouldn't seep through, but it worked!
I tell you, muslin is amazing, I would highly recommend the product, 5 stars, 2 thumbs up and every other type of high approval rating.

Horseface

So I just got out of my 20th Century of Fashion class and I must say that I absolutely love it.
My teacher is a fantastic lecturer and loves conversation within the class.
I started zoning out, however; and noticed that my friend, Brittany, was looking at a muslin tank she had brought with her. She had apparently run out of time to do an entire side seam and was contemplating working on it during the class.
I told her that I do that all the time, you don't need to pay that much attention to the garment if you're just basting or backstitching, and since our teacher is a Fashion professor, I was sure he wouldn't mind anyway. The sewing teachers always prefer a machine stitch, but as someone who enjoys working with her hands, I have a soft spot for any excuse to do a little hand work. I do it all the time, they want a machine stitch, but unless you're doing heavy construction that involves the teacher looking insidethe garment, they will only be looking at the outside fit (this only works if you're on a practice piece, of course).
Suddenly I saw thread on her desk and I started laughing as she threaded her needle and started working on her tank. I told her that I did the same thing with the crotch of the pants I was making last week. There was some very unflattering bunching I didn't notice until I had finished so I quickly seam ripped it and backstitched a new seam rather than head to the next room to use the machine.
I also told her that I was a bad student because I have a new fit for the pants due today (in ten minutes to be exact) and while I did 98% of it last night, I went to bed before doing the second pocket. I could have easily finished but was tired and as I had an hour between that class and sewing I would do it then (which I have). She laughed and told me that I wasn't that terrible since I did do one of the pockets already, which she herself would have skipped.
Anywho, the reason for the title of this post is because we talked about Chanel today, briefly, but I always enjoy Chanel. She was so controversial. It came up that she had a German/Nazi lover during Germany's occupation of France. I had already known this, but people were shocked.
Our teacher reminded us that Chanel was "a great opportunist." She saw Germany had control, so she made love to Germany. Of course once the war was over she was shunned and went into self-exile, but she was able to come back within a couple years and resumed her reign at the top, a remarkable feat in Fashion, a comeback is rarely possible.
I told Brit that one of my teachers Freshmen year always went off about Chanel. She wasn't simply an "opportunist," she was kind of. . . whorey. Chanel would sleep with anything that moved if it meant furthering her business, for Fashion was not an Art for her, it was Business (yes there is a huge difference). But I mean both men and women. And orgies. Really whatever she could get her hands on. My teacher thought this was remarkable, commendable and impressive. Why? Because she had a face like a horse.
I believe this is one of those "well, more power to ya," moments.

Wine and Design Debut!

Sadly, this post is starting off with me already a little miffed!
I am design student and have a jacket due in One Week. The model that has been assigned to me runs her own business, which is very admirable, especially since she has been met with a good amount of success, but unfortunately, her unavailability will soon be impacting my grade.
I meet twice a week for sewing class and all models are supposed to be available during class times on those days, they were told to accept that responsibility when they signed up to be a model for our fashion show. She has already missed three sessions with me and will be missing it again tomorrow as her company is taking priority.
I have had four fittings with her and had alterations done and ready for her last Friday, but she wasn't in, I asked if she would be fine for this Tuesday (tomorrow) and she never answered. I asked again and was greeted with a big, fat "No." She agreed to meet in the middle of the week and Friday is a "maybe" for her. Not acceptable when I haven't been able to cut out my patterns in Self yet, (for those who are unfamiliar with the term, Self is the final outside fabric used in garment/article of clothing). Lets not even talk about the fact that I have not practiced putted in lining in Years and that I actually forgot to buy it over the weekend as well! Just a reminder, this is due in One Week.
My other model is just as bad, but I do not need her presently which is kind of unfortunate as she Is available tomorrow. I can't even switch the models because alterations have already been done for each garment to fit each model specifically.
I swear, if it wasn't morning (I know, it's 3 but I just got up and had breakfast), I would have broken our the wine already! Yes, I am still tempted.
As a college student you always have to find the space between life and alcoholism and draw the damn line. My fellow design student, Ash, always breaks out a wine cooler or Mike's and goes on about how she works better when she has a bit in her, she is not so stressed that every stitch or quarter inch reduction means life or death. I cannot tell you how many times drinking has been the cure for all of our designing ails.
Ash and I once got into a conversation about our working schedules with a man that worked at B&J Fabrics. He was amazed at how little time we have leftover after working so much and he straight up asked what we do when we are not working. We looked at each other, looked at him and simply replied, "Drink."
